Clarabelle’s Story

Clarabelle / Female / 2.5 years / 50 pounds / Hound mix / Sweet and Affectionate / Good with Dogs / No Cats or Critters Please / Untested but Likely Good with Kids (8+) / from Tennessee / Fostered in Hamilton

Meet Clarabelle! This southern belle is a special little lady who will soon steal your heart. Clarabelle was surrendered to our rescue partner and brought to Ontario for a chance at a better life. She is a total sweetheart with a lot of love to give. She loves her people and is very affectionate. She will look up at you with the biggest doe eyes and put her head on your lap waiting for pets. Clarabelle is medium to high energy and thrives with lots of walks and time outdoors, as well as indoor enrichment, followed by naps and cuddles on the couch.

Clarabelle loves getting out for her walks and spending time in the yard. She is a smart cookie and loves working hard for treats. She is a true hound and loves the chance to follow her nose and get some good sniffs. She loves playing sniffy games and tracking anything. Clarabelle walks well on leash but is constantly sniffing and trying to follow her nose. She prefers quieter streets away from noisy vehicles which can be distracting. She may bark when she sees a new dog on leash, and will bark and react to cats and small animals, especially pesky squirrels. Clarabelle is a flight risk as she is very fast, can jump high, and won't hesitate to chase a squirrel or rabbit. We recommend her adoptive family invest in a GPS collar for her.

Clarabelle is polite and well-behaved in the house. She is crate trained and may bark when first left alone but settles within a few minutes. She can stay in her crate for up to 5 hours. Clarabelle primarily spends time in one part of the house but she has not shown any destructive tendencies. Clarabelle sleeps in her crate through the night without issue. When her fosters are home, Clarabelle prefers being very close to them and will follow them around. Clarabelle is working on potty training but still needs to be watched and does have occasional accidents. Her fosters are working with her on this but she will likely need support once she moves homes.

Clarabelle is a smart girl and food motivated so basic training is going well. She does best if she's had an opportunity to go out and get some energy out. She also loves enrichment and this helps calm her down and work out some energy. She will need ongoing training and lots of outlets for her energy.

Clarabelle's ideal home would be with an active family that has a lot of time and love to give her. She needs a family that is committed to her training and will continue working on the basics with her. She would love a family that likes to spend time on trails or in nature, she would truly thrive with lots of outdoor time. True to her breed, she would love doing scent training or tracking. She has not met any children since coming into care but based on her sweet nature and personality, we believe she would do well with older, dog-savvy children (8+). Clarabelle lived with other dogs on the farm in Tennessee and could very likely join the home as a second dog. She would also be fine as the only dog in the home to soak up all the attention. She would not do well in a home with cats or other small creatures as she is likely to chase. Clarabelle would do best in a home with a yard. She is at times vocal so would not be suited to apartment or condo living. She also appreciates a quiet neighbourhood.
