As a foster-to-adopt family, you will have two weeks to get to know your new furry house guest before committing to adoption. At the end of two weeks, if you choose not to move forward with adoption, we simply ask that you continue to provide a safe and loving home until their new forever family can be found.
During your foster-to-adopt trial, you’ll receive the support of a Fetch + Releash mentor to help you through the transition and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Foster-to-adopt families will be required to pay a $200 deposit on the adoption fee and sign our foster-to-adopt waiver in advance. If you choose not to adopt, your $200 will be refunded to you within 30 days of your dog being adopted into a new family provided you see your pup through to adoption. If you choose not to see your dog through to adoption, you will forfeit your deposit.
Foster-to-adopt families will be expected to provide their own supplies. Visit https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info for more info on mandatory supplies.

Capuchina / F / 7Y / 35lbs / Mixed Breed / Medium energy / Dog selective / No cats please / Kids 14+/ From Mexico / Fostered in Warkworth
Meet Capuchina! Capuchina's foster describes her as energetic and affectionate. Capuchina came into our care after being abandoned in a house with no food or water. After this heartbreaking chapter in her life, Capuchina is ready to start fresh with her very special forever family. She loves bell rubs and massages and will approach her fosters to ask for cuddles. Capuchina loves playing with humans and dogs who have gained her trust. She enjoys walkies, fetch and, of course, treats! Her fosters say that she is wonderfully goofy and expressive. When asked to shake a paw, Capuchina is sure to do so with dramatic gusto that will put a smile on anyone's face.
With people she knows and trusts, Capuchina will be your little shadow. She will approach you with a little reindeer prance to show her happiness. If you are patient enough for her to come out of her shell, Capuchina will reward you with unwavering love and adoration. Given her past, Capuchina is understandably wary of unfamiliar people. She has been making great improvements with meeting new people though. Her fosters describe her as apprehensive but curious and friendly whenever she meets someone new.
Capuchina can play a bit rough with children so her perfect family would be one without any young kids. It is also important that all members of the family respect Capuchina's feelings and give her space and time to adjust as needed. Capuchina's ideal forever home would be in a rural or suburban setting with a balanced resident dog to help her settle in and feel more comfortable. Her forever family should be familiar and dedicated to positive reinforcement training and be patient and understanding of her decompression period and nervousness. Capuchina is currently doing very well on a raw diet and her forever family would ideally be willing to continue this diet with her or at least be committed to feeding high-quality kibble like Acana or Orijen. Capuchina would do best in a home where she is not left alone for long periods, where she can get lots of mental enrichment and physical exercise. Her foster thinks she would do wonderfully in agility sports!
Capuchina has not lived with a cat while in care but has previously shown some prey drive. While she may eventually be able to share her home with a dog-savvy kitty companion, at this time we ask that she go to a cat-free home. In the past, Capuchina has been reactive to other dogs who are high-energy. She is currently doing wonderfully in her foster home and loves playing with specific canine companions. Capuchina will need an experienced forever home that will continue to work with her interactions with other dogs. We think she would do best with another well balanced dog in the home.
Capuchina's foster describes her as a high-energy dog. She spends her days going for walks, playing fetch, hide and seek and running around with her selected doggy friends. She is currently focusing on impulse control exercises as a form of mental stimulation. Capuchina has made great improvements with walking on a leash. She can get excited by squirrels and pull at times, but she no longer reacts to normal traffic or people.
Capuchina is house-trained and crate-trained. She is crated for a short period each day and she takes about two minutes to settle in. Capuchina does not show any destructive tendencies but she may find something to get into that she shouldn't. For this reason, she should be crated when her people are not home until they can build trust and boundaries with her. Capuchina spends the night in her crate and she sleeps soundly throughout the night. Capuchina is fine being left in her crate but she always has her doggy friends in the same room with her; a resident dog may help her to settle faster in her new home. Capuchina has mastered many basic obedience commands and loves her training sessions since she is very food-motivated. Capuchina is great at traveling in the car!
Capuchina has mild enamel hypoplasia, which is thinning of the enamel on her teeth. Home care (brushing) will help but she may require professional dental cleaning in the future. She should avoid hard chews, toys, and treats as her teeth will be more prone to breaking during play.
Capuchina is currently on 5mg of Melatonin to naturally assist with some anxiety, which she has been doing very well on and should continue this supplement.
Due to Capuchina's unique circumstances, prospective adopters must commit to attending training sessions with her post-adoption with a certified R+ dog trainer to ensure a successful transition.
