As a foster-to-adopt family, you will have two weeks to get to know your new furry house guest before committing to adoption. At the end of two weeks, if you choose not to move forward with adoption, we simply ask that you continue to provide a safe and loving home until their new forever family can be found.

During your foster-to-adopt trial, you’ll receive the support of a Fetch + Releash mentor to help you through the transition and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Foster-to-adopt families will be required to pay a $200 deposit on the adoption fee and sign our foster-to-adopt waiver in advance. If you choose not to adopt, your $200 will be refunded to you within 30 days of your dog being adopted into a new family provided you see your pup through to adoption. If you choose not to see your dog through to adoption, you will forfeit your deposit.

Foster-to-adopt families will be expected to provide their own supplies. Visit https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info for more info on mandatory supplies.

Phylis / Female / 2 years old / 35 lbs / Mixed Breed / Could be a Second Dog with Proper and Slow Introductions / No Cats Please / No Young Children Please / From Mexico / Fostered in Toronto

Meet Phylis! Phylis is a very special little lady in search of a patient and understanding forever home. She has a past that has left her quite nervous and wary of strangers. That said, once she warms up to her trusted people, she will let her lovely personality shine through and is incredibly playful and affectionate. Her fosters describe her as curious, independent, loving, and very smart. She is super cute and gets very goofy when playing with her toys. Once she is worn out she will climb up next to her trusted people for a couch cuddle and is very affectionate when she gets what she wants.

Phylis currently lives downtown but would really thrive in a less busy environment. She recently had a vacation outside the city and loved it. She thrived exploring trails and was much more confident in the open space and really came out of her shell. She would do best in a rural or suburban setting with access to parks, trails, and other outdoor space.

Phylis loves and enjoys all kinds of enrichment. She hunts her kibble in enrichment boxes and around the house. She likes to toss her stuffies and chase them (she also likes to remove the stuffing). She loves to eat, and loves to chew and shred chewy bones. She loves going out in the yard for sniffs. Once she's comfortable, she will ask for cuddles and scratches, but always on her terms.

Phylis is good in the house and has been left for up to five hours without issue. She will usually just nap on the couch. She's crate trained and may hang out in her crate but is not destructive so she is generally left out and gated away from the front door/hallway noises for her comfort as she is sensitive to hallway noises. Phylis sleeps in her foster's bed and will go between the bed and the couch as it suits her. Phylis knows basic commands and is very food motivated and eager to learn. Phylis is fully potty trained.

Phylis shows interest in meeting other dogs but can also be reactive if approached too quickly. She currently lives in a condo and gets stressed if she has to pass a dog in the hallway so her fosters try to avoid as much as possible. Once outside where she has more space, Phylis is much less bothered by being near dogs and hardly ever reacts and will simply move away from strange dogs or people if she doesn’t want to interact. Phylis is by nature wary of meeting new people and dogs and will take time to warm up to new people and dogs. She is curious though and has made a few doggie and people friends in her building so with consistent and calm meetings she is definitely capable of positive interactions with other dogs and people.

Phylis is currently suspicious and anxious in new environments and when meeting new people, and she will need ongoing help developing self-confidence. She would benefit by positive interactions and slow exposure to calm and confident dogs and people, and by time spent in open spaces such as nature trails and parks. She is looking for an adopter who has experience with anxious and shy dogs, or who is open to coaching. She will need an adopter committed to allowing her to decompress and supporting her.

Phylis is looking for a patient and quiet home that will treat her in a calm and gentle manner and help temper her quirks. She would do best in a house with a yard in a quiet suburban or rural area, and she would do best in a home with a single person or couple, and without a lot of people going in and out. She would thrive in a rural environment or with access to trails and outdoor spaces. Phylis has previously lived with another dog and did well but will require proper and slow introductions. She would also do well in a home as the only dog. Phylis has not been tested with children and is looking for a home without children. Phylis has not been tested with cats since arriving into foster care and would do best in a home without cats.

During Phylis’ trial adoption, Fetch + Releash will be offering behavioural support to her potential adopters to help her transition to a new environment.
